Wisdom from a talking sponge

So, things have been busy for me. And there are HUGE and somewhat nasty looking hurdles and difficult times coming up within a few weeks (no details). Plus I'm still getting up WAY to early (~5 A.M.) to get to the one teaching job (which I am very grateful for BTW while it lasts). So, it would have been really easy to just be so negative Friday when I didn't get much sleep before the alarm went off. Fortunately, I had just had the SpongeBob Squarepants movie on while I worked Thursday night. And as I drove the hour plus to work in the early darkness of the beginnings of dawn, I started singing this from the movie soundtrack (plays with some other songs during the credits)...

Mr. Sun came up and he smiled at me
Said "It's gonna be a good one, just wait and see!"
Jumped out of bed, and I ran outside
Feeling so ecstatic -- satisfied.

It's the best day ever (best day ever)
It's the best day ever (best day ever)

I'm so busy, got nothing to do
Spent the last two hours just tying my shoe
Every flower, every grain of sand
Is reaching out out to shake my hand

It's the best day ever (best day ever)
It's the best day ever (best day ever)

Sometimes the little things start closing in on me
When I'm feeling down, I wanna lose that frown
I stick my head out the window and look around
Those crowds don't scare me, they can't disguise
It's magic that's happening right before my eyes

Soon Mr. Moon will be shining bright
So the best day ever can last all night
Yeah, the best day ever's gonna last all night, now.

It's the best day ever (best day ever)
It's the best day ever (best day ever)

I also sang a couple other songs (as well as I could remember) such as the one by the Flaming Lips ("Spongebob & Patrick Confront the Psychic Wall of Energy"). And you know, without realizing it, I wound up being in SUCH a good mood and so cheery and pleasant that people commented on it througout the day. Now, I am normally fairly pleasant to my students and coworkers, so it must have been REALLY noticeable.

Made me think about practices like visualizations, mantras, and the like. Might make you think about them too. ;o)

  1. I am really happy for you buddy, that you got your teaching career going. I know it's hard but hang in there, someday they will all be talking about the works of the great Tiny Thinker, or "Dr. Tiny" as you will be known.

Dont' let all the problems "stump" you. ;-)

I miss your input on message boards.

  2. I wouldn't say I have it going quite yet. I will be working most likely through a temp agency for at least the summer and who knows how long after that. I will certainly make an announcement if a longshot comes through for the fall, but after that the odds of getting an academic position drop of precipitously as I won't have opportunities to keep my CV updated with new "professional activities". :o)
