Onward Christian Soldiers III

Matthew 26:52

"Put away your swords; for all who live by the sword, shall die by the sword."

Senator Bill Frist is experiencing that lesson. He played up the drama in using his medical background to make a pseudo-diagnosis of Terri Schiavo on the floor of the Senate, a diagnosis contrary to specialist opinions and made without examining the patient, to bolster the portion of the anti-abortion wing of evangelical Christianity crowd who had been drawn in to support the bid to keep the braindead woman's feeding tube inserted. He went before the same highly conservative group of evangelical Christians on "Justice Sunday" to accuse those who opposed Bush's judicial nominations as being against "people of faith". But then Frist went and opposed Bush on the issue of stem cell research, and the same sword he used to swipe at Michael Schiavo, the same sword that he used to help pass unconstitutional legislation in the Schiavo affair, the same sword he used to attack Congressional Democrats as enemies of faith (even though most of them are Christians)--that same sword is now being swung at his own neck:

Evangelical ads target Frist in Iowa

DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) -- An evangelical group has begun a weeklong advertising campaign in Iowa criticizing Senate Majority Leader Bill Frist for backing expanded embryonic stem cell research.

"We know Iowa is a way to get everybody's attention," said Gary Cass, head of the Florida-based Center for Reclaiming America. "Our hope is Senator Frist will hear from Iowans and they are kind of a bellwether state in the heartland."

Iowa is a critical state in the presidential nominating process and Frist is considered a potential candidate for the Republican nomination in 2008.

In the ad, which shows a photo of a smiling baby, an announcer says: "Senator Frist: we cannot save innocent lives by destroying them. Tell Senator Frist to stand with President Bush and oppose research that destroys human embryos."
